The company was originally founded by Harry Schubkegel, the former owner of Session Musik in Walldorf, which is also indicated by the name S.M.I.L.E. (Smile Session Musik Instrumente Lager und Elektronik Vertriebs GmbH).

The owner, Dirk Hesse, is the namesake and initially worked as sales manager, from August 1988 as partner and managing director, and from 1993 as sole shareholder and managing director.
